Echoes of the Past (People of the Longhouse Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 140 ratings

When approached with a request to spy on his former people, Ogteah rejected the mere idea of it vehemently, even though it made his loyalty to his current people suspected, to a degree. Still, he wouldn’t do it. It was shabby, unfitting, more suited of the old Ogteah from his previous life.
Yet, with the circumstances conspiring against him, he had found himself plunging into the vastness of the Great Sparkling Water, nevertheless, alone and armed mainly with their unofficial warriors’ leader’s instructions and some goods to trade, a meager attempt to camouflage his true purpose.

In the meanwhile, the Wyandot from the other side of the Great Lake were working hard, anxious to convince the rest of the local nations into joining their union, perturbed by the Great League’s growing power and might, troubled by it. Even the defeated Long Tails did not keep quiet, recovering some of their former fighting spirit, the unlikely survivors among their leaders, people Ogteah certainly didn’t care to meet or remember.

All this and more awaited Ogteah as he headed across the Great Sparkling Water, against his and everyone else’s better judgment.

Zoe Saadia is the author of several novels of pre-Columbian Americas. From the architects of the Aztec Empire to the founders of the Iroquois Great League, from the towering pyramids of Tenochtitlan to the longhouses of the Great Lakes, her novels bring long-forgotten history, cultures and people to life, tracing pivotal events that brought about the greatness of North and Mesoamerica.

Having researched various pre-contact cultures of this continent for more than a decade, she is convinced that it's a shame that such a large part of history was completely overlooked, by historical fiction most of all.

Both Americas have an extremely rich, diverse, fascinating history long before this continent came to contact with the rest of the world

So her professional motto is set. America has not been 'discovered' by other continents, not yet. Maybe not ever. Not in her novels

I love and have reviewed all the earlier volumes in Zoe Saadia's "People of the Longhouse" series. This new volume, "Echoes of the Past," (Book 5) is up to the high standard of Saadia's previous books in this series. You probably can read this volume before you read the earlier works, but I assure you that once you have read any of these, you'll want to own them all. In Echoes of the Past, wherein the vast Great Sparkling Water sets the backdrop for this new tale of Ancient America. When approached with a request to spy on his former people, Ogteah, the hero, has scruples and thinks for himself, a rare thing in any adventure tale today. Alone and armed with a few instructions and some trade goods, he sets out to gain knowledge crucial to his people. Meanwhile, the Wyandot strive to create union among disparate tribes from the far side of the Great Lake. As the Great League's power grows... Join Ogteah as he crosses the Great Sparkling Water, against advice and his own best interest, to do what must be done. This Ancient America series is a rare and fresh look at cultural heritage and passion in a world you'll want to visit again and again.Wonderful.

Loved this series of stories. It was so interesting to read of native Americans before the white man came. To learn of these people, which I knew very little of. By

All the work of the peacekeeper could still be fulfilled. Those who have read the other books of the series will need to read this book to find out. While hard to get back into the characters after waiting a year for its release. it was worth the trouble to find out what was going on. My only hope is that Saadia follows up and finishes the tale she has so expert lyrics woven.

Once again we meet the the people trying to unite two nations, so much alike yet so different. Will they be successful or will all their intrigue only result in further enmity between the nations. Watch for the surprises as well, the kind only family can provide.

This is a great series on early history. The characters are interesting, and the author doesn't jump around. The editing could have been a little better as you find words that don't belong, but it doesn't take away from the books.

If you were hoping for more from Tsutahi and Aingahon after book four, then boy are you in for a treat! These two were my absolute favourites from both the Peacemaker and the Longhouse series, so I was absolutely overjoyed to see them back again.

In this book, Ogteah - being good with people and having travelled a lot - is sent on a spying mission to the far bank of Lake Ontario. Unfortunately, being good with people and having travelled a lot, there are plenty on the other side of the lake who are able to recognise him and see through his phony backstory. Soon enough he's desperately juggling lies and diplomacy as old friends, enemies and even family cross his path...

This book is a wonderful ending to the series, giving us another glimpse of old favourite characters and introducing us to some new ones too (like the sweetly hapless Atuye). If you've read the others, you already know how great this series is, so buy this one now!
