4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 75 ratings

Changed, full of purpose and determination, Atolli returns home, only to find that his goals could not be achieved as easily as he hoped. The Great Tepanec Capital is full of political intrigue, a dangerous ground to tread even for his influential father, Tecpatl, now the Emperor’s Adviser. Eager to help his son, Tecpatl discovers that politics could be a more difficult ground than a battlefield.

While struggling to achieve their aims, Tecpatl, Atolli, his mother, and even his younger brother find themselves on different, unexpected paths, each determined to solve their problems in their own way.

The action shifts back to the Tepanec Capital. The struggle to achieve their goals turns out to be more difficult than Atolli, Tecpatl, and the others had anticipated, while the restless Mesoamerican history keeps offering them more and more challenges.

Zoe Saadia is the author of several novels of pre-Columbian Americas. From the architects of the Aztec Empire to the founders of the Iroquois Great League, from the towering pyramids of Tenochtitlan to the longhouses of the Great Lakes, her novels bring long-forgotten history, cultures and people to life, tracing pivotal events that brought about the greatness of North and Mesoamerica.

Having researched various pre-contact cultures of this continent for more than a decade, she is convinced that it's a shame that such a large part of history was completely overlooked, by historical fiction most of all.

Both Americas have an extremely rich, diverse, fascinating history long before this continent came to contact with the rest of the world

So her professional motto is set. America has not been 'discovered' by other continents, not yet. Maybe not ever. Not in her novels

I am an amateur student of histories, mainly of European, Egyptian, and Mediterranean cultures. As I know only the broad outline of Mesoamerican history, I was intrigued with this series set in the pre-Aztec central Mexica area. Have to say, I was very satisfied with every book in the series (I believe a total of 9 or 10 books in all).

The stories are gripping, exciting, and, I assume, historically accurate (in the broader themes) as proscribed by this well written author. I look forward to more of her work, especially anything about pre-conquest Mesoamerica.

Diving deeply into pre-Columbian Mexico the novel reveals in depth characters who reach out to us across time. The novel is an easy read, hard to set down, and demanding the story continue.

.The entire Pre-Aztec Series is just fantastic. The research is great, the weaving of the story and the characters all have a realness that is believable. Zoe Saadia is a great storyteller/historian (my personal view). I began with a free Kindle and have purchased almost every single other of this series and the next ---The Rise of Aztec Series. I just finished the Currents of War and as true to the others this is a good book. I still hope this becomes a movie or mini series.

There must be a problem with the device that transfers the printed version of a book to digital because no one as educated as Zoe seems to be could make all those verb case and wrong word mistakes that are encountered in this series. The story is marvelous and I would recommend it to anyone. Someone needs to read these in digital form before they are posted. As it is they make the author look like an idiot.
Five stars for story/one star for mechanics.

This is an action story of a Tepeniac warrior family. The story is about their daily life and customs in the valley of central Mexico in the 14th century. A must read. well written.

Finally a well written and obviously well researched historical fiction novel on native American historey. History buffs have always been able to read about knights in shining armor but very little has been written using the native American pre-Columbian cultures. Zoe Saadia has ventured into a "new" area and has done an excellent job. Informative as well as entertaining and seamlessly connecting to Book 2.

After reafing the Gary Jennings Aztec series I struggled to find another author who demonstrated ample knowledge of pre-comlumbian Mexico and wrote in such a way that you were hesitant to put the book down, and then I discoverd Zoe Saadua! I have read the pre-Aztec series and am curently on book 3 of the Aztec series. You will not be disappointed, but be prepared to purchase one book after another. You won't want to miss what comes next...

Zoe does a fabulous job of providing excellent background and historical details with a dramatic storyline. I've read all her books in this series and each one is memorable! If you like native American culture brought to life, give this book a try

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent series finale

This is where the Pre-Aztec series ends (before neatly being followed by the Rise of the Aztecs series). Naturally, I wouldn't want to give away too much of the plot, but when the family's loyalty to the Azcapotzalco altepetl is questioned, it seems there can be only one way out... or can there? This kept me on the edge of my seat, right up until the exciting climax. Well worth a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant ending to the pre-Aztec series

It's hard to review this without giving too much away, so I'll just say that this brings the adventures of the first and second books to a satisfying close, and paves the way for the next series. Exciting, gripping and strangely moving.
